We asked Alice Morigi, to share her five favorite Full Cast Audio releases for this month’s “FCA Five.” Here’s what she told us:

.		First is Polyam, in DAJA’S BOOK by Tamora Pierce. Polyam used to be leader of the trader caravans, a position of great responsibility and respect. Now half-blind and one-legged due to severe injuries suffered in a dreadful accident, reduced in rank and esteem, she is bitter, repressed, angry at her world, and in constant pain. Through the good will of nascent metal mage, Daja, and her companions, however, Polyam is given help beyond any expectation, and is thereby “reborn” to her people and in her own mind. Being caught in a fast-moving forest fire is a prime feature of this book. We often hear of those in the western United States and elsewhere, but in DAJA’S BOOK we are encircled by one – blinded, choking, terrified by the blistering heat, the swirling ash – an extraordinary experience both on the page and in audio. .
.		Second is another Tamora Pierce, THE WILL OF THE EMPRESS, for older young people. This gave me the satisfaction of being an immensely clever woman, wiley beyond most others in my world, and supreme in magical power. I was Ishabal Ladyhammer, chief counselor to the Empress whom I’d trained and advised from that royal child’s youth. Ishabal cannot conceive of a situation she cannot handle, mold her to her wishes, be it personal or political. To learn she is not infallible, to be utterly humiliated and vanquished by the four young Circle of Magic mages visiting the Empress’s court in this intricately plotted story of sexual and diplomatic tensions, was a real challenge to express through my voice, as Ishabal’s arrogant confidence is gone, only a tinge of hope for her future restoration remaining to her, in the her last scene. .
.		In GILBERT AND SULLIVAN SET ME FREE by Kathleen Karr, I was Jessie Hodder, a real historical person who was superintendent of a Boston-area women’s prison in 1914. This no-nonsense professional must oversee and direct the lives of those in her charge – female murderers, arsonists, felons of every sort, some of whose crimes were truly heinous – and the work of their warders. When a young girl, a thief, is brought in, and a new lady chaplain galvanizes the entire prison by steering the talents of the inmates first to a performance of Handel’s “Messiah”, then in a production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance”, Jessie Hodder grows in understanding of the inmates and their needs. Her dawning sympathy for the girl, the colorful personalities of the prisoners, plot twists and the revelation of the girl’s dismaying background, plus the beautiful music, make this a very satisfying audio of the book. .
.		For Christmas 2003 I received Shannon Hale’s THE GOOSE GIRL, a young people’s novel based upon my favorite fairy tale of all time. Thinking it a perfect book for FCA to do, I lent it to Bruce Coville, who read it and agreed with me. And it was, garnering respect and appreciation for Full Cast. Thus I was delighted some years later to be asked to read “tutor” Olana in Hale’s THE PRINCESS ACADEMY. Because it has been foretold that the prince’s bride will be found in a remote mountain village, court lady Olana Mansdaughter is sent to turn a large, long abandoned building into a school not far from the village, where she will instruct all the girls of the proper age in everything a princess must know, so that whomever the prince chooses will be able to fit into court life after her marriage and perform the royal duties expected of her. The personalities of the girls in opposition to Olana’s strictures, the fact that the valuable building stone mined on the mountain can promote telepathic communication, a terrifying raid by the crude and murderous mountain bandits, are among the factors that soften Olana’s hard shell of resentment at being sent here, and she comes to reluctant appreciation of these people whose social level and abilities are so different from those of the lowlands. .
.		In reading Mrs. Edith, the wardrobe mistress of the vast and mysterious Theatre Illuminata in Lisa Mantchev’s EYES LIKE STARS, I was immediately back home in the huge old theatres whre I’ve acted, designed and made costumes in the past. To this wondrous place the foundling girl-child, Bertie, was brought many years ago. Around her bedroom on stage, scenery, thunder and lightning, sunshine and moonbeams, props and people appear and disappear by magic. She has grown into her teens surrounded by and interacting with the backstage workers as well as with all the characters of Shakespeare’s plays who also dwell here, her fast friends (and annoyances) being four tiny pie’n'cake-loving fairies from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. Now, when Bertie may be forced to leave the Theatre, the concerned Mrs. Edith must at last reveal the girl’s heritage and how she came under the wardrobe mistress’s loving care. Although this story is especially appealing to those who enjoy attending plays and/or who’ve ever worked on a production of one, whether in school or professionally, this tale of life behind the footlights, of how a finished production is created through the agencies of the costume, props, sets, lighting, sound departments under the supervision of the director, with magical effects abounding, is pure entertainment for all who enter the world of the Theatre Illuminata. .

Travis’s Tacey’s mother has had an accident, a bad one, and the family is falling apart. His father, lost in a haze of grief, has focused his anger and guilt on his oldest son. Which is why, at age fourteen, Travis finds himself out of a home and on the road in New York State’s Adirondack Mountains.

With no more than a few dollars, a change of clothes, and his great-great-great grandfather’s guitar, Travis wonders how he is going to survive. But the world is not always cruel, as Travis discovers when he is befriended by guitar-maker Scott McKissack and realizes that with luck, and music, he might even be able to reunite his shattered family.

Richly populated with vivid and endearing characters, resonating with a love of music, this recording of MJ Auch’s novel will speak (and sing) directly to the hearts of listeners of all ages.

While putting together this list, I was reminded of the many wonderful experiences that Full Cast’s recordings have provided me over the years, and the in depth knowledge I’ve picked up on each and every title! SUE STREETER: I became part of the FCA family in June 2004 and have been here for 6 years now. What started as a part time job doing the library sales grew into becoming office and production manager. Before I came to FCA, I had a gallery called Chairz ( it was located on the same street as FCA! ) that had over 60 consigned artists. I’ve held various management positions through out the years ranging from a Framing Gallery to a World of Science store, but FCA has become my family and I value the work that we all do here.
